Garden Showroom & Maze Highlights
Cattleya orchids are the showier of orchid varieties, often used in corsages. Most of these orchids are seasonal bloomers but hybridization has allowed for these orchids to bloom more than once a year. Blooms will last for about 2 weeks if left on the plant and are usually fragrant. Not many people are in the business of growing Cattleyas. Their growth
process from seed to maturity is much longer than other varieties.
While other types show spikes and blooms much earlier, the larger, much
showier blossoms are worth the wait.
One of Akatsuka Orchids' specialties is creating unique Cattleya hybrids. Mr. Akatsuka often places his signature mark after naming an orchid. If the name of the orchid is followed by ‘Volcano Queen”, “Volcano Princess”, or ‘Volcano Sunshine”, etc. it was created right here at Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. Anything on a label tag that starts with AO-XXX, or MA-XXX is an Akatsuka Original orchid and it was created right here in our orchid nursery.
When Mr. Akatsuka comes across a new hybrid that passes his 7-tier criteria which includes looking at flower form, bloom & plant size, ease of growth, color of blooms, fragrance, substance of flower tissue & season of blooming, he will choose a new name for this cross. Many of his orchids are named after family members & special friends.
The Legacy Club allows customers to recognize or memorialize loved ones
by naming one of Mr. Akatsuka’s original Cattleya hybrids.
In 1998 our Legacy Club was conceived and we started naming orchids after our customers. In that same year, Kristi Yamaguchi, the Olympic champion figure skater and Dancing with the Stars winner came to visit our gardens. She was the first non-family member to have one of his hybrid Cattleyas named after her.
Today we feature many of our Legacy Club orchids still blooming on our showroom floor.
- Purchasing the naming rights to an Akatsuka Original Cattleya orchid plant is a great way to leave your legacy behind!
The plant will forever be known in the orchid world as the name of your choice. Any future cross breeds will carry on the name as well. The name and legacy of your family or special someone will live on for years to come. It's truly a unique gift that will last a lifetime.

The $20,000 Orchid
If you are visiting our showroom during the summer months between May-August be sure to view the "$20,000 Orchid" - Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum var. esquirolei ‘Volcano Queen’ FCC/AOS. While it is not the only plant like this in the world, it is the only one of it's kind with perfect symmetry and unusual horizontal (almost upward pointing) display of its side petals. It was awarded a First Class Certificate (FCC) for size and symmetry in 1991. It received 91 out of a possible 100 pts - the most points ever awarded to a paphiopedilum.
